"The Peak of Good Living," as Apex is known, was originally settled around 1867 and was the highest point on the Chatham Railroad between Richmond, VA and Jacksonville, FL. At that time, the town was an important shipping point for products such as turpentine, tar and lumber from the surrounding forestlands.
