Hillsborough

History flourishes in the town of Hillsborough. People have settled here for over a thousand years -- it was once home to five different Native American tribes, including the influential Occaneechi tribe. Decades later, the site became the colonial capital of North Carolina and was a center of political activity during Revolutionary War times. Then during the Civil War, the last headquarters of the Confederacy was established at the Alexander Dickson homestead. And still today, history lives on – Hillsborough is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is host to more than 100 buildings, stores and homes dating back to the late 18th or early 19th century.

Amidst the history though, modern conveniences abound. Hillsborough is conveniently situated near I-40 and midway between the Triangle and the Triad area (Winston-Salem/Greensboro/High Point). It’s approximately 45 minutes from Raleigh. And with the recent completion of Interstate 540, access for residents to the entire Triangle area is suddenly even easier. Hillsborough’s location is one reason unemployment here is an unheard-of 1%. The town was also recently named the “3rd Best Place to Raise a Family” by Outside magazine. Its charm, thriving arts population, wealth of recreational activities and down-home feel all contribute to an enviable quality of life that only Hillsborough offers. Combined with a population of only 5,000 and the beauty of a rolling countryside, it’s easy to see the attraction to this historic North Carolina gem.
